Since mid-July the Pukkelpop caravan has found its way again to Kiewit, where an energetic buzz zooms through the streets and people. Day by day more stages, tents, snack bars, carousels and other pretty things rise up from nowhere to be part of another amazing Pukkelpop edition (#pkp14). As long as I can remember I have made some of my best summer memories at that big, smelly and rhythmic festival area; my first festival, chillin' with my best friends, meeting Arctic Monkeys, first time talking to my boyfriend, enjoying beautiful sunsets, listening to delicate tunes and eating the greasiest food.
Although I would like to share more of my beloved memories with you, this still is a food blog and therefore, after this walk down memory lane, we go back to business and discuss the festival food I had the last couple of days (except for the delicious food my grandma made in the morning and at noon!)
Nowadays, you can try out the most absurd and extravagant food on festivals, such as mussels, oysters, Thai cuisine, sushi, pie stuffed with stew and meat balls and so on and so on ...
As a result, next to the traditional "frietjes met stoofvlees" (mmmmmm) and more "frietjes met boulet" (njammie!) I decided to experiment a bit and try out less traditional and more exotic festival food!
So, while exploring the festival area I discovered "Ben"s bugs!" (take a look at their website here). A fine stand with the visionary message that in the future insects will be the excellent alternative source for meat and fish. Although, most people do not like the idea of eating insects I don't see the problem. Some years ago I tried grasshoppers and I really liked the nut-like taste, a bit like roasted hazelnuts. The burgers are made of meal worms, that follow a specific, nutritive diet and 70 - 80% of the meat of the worms can be used for the production of burgers (or other food).
You could choose between a Classic (bun, one insect burger, lettuce, tomato and BBQ-sauce) and a Ceasar (ciabatta, one insect burger, brie ail/yogurt dressing, lettuce and tomato). Since, the grasshoppers tasted like nuts I thought the combination of insects and brie could not go wrong! The verdict: The burger tasted like a "normal" burger, only less greasy than a meat burger and less dry than a vegetarian one and it had a "nutty" flavour to it. The combination with the "nutty" flavour and the brie was perfect! To conclude: I surely recommend everyone to try an insect burger when you have the opportunity! The good news is that from fall the "BestBugsBurger" will be available in (specialized) stores!
Something less exotic but as creative and funny was the "sappentapper". A smoothiebar where you had to blend your own smoothie by hitting the pedals of an old, rusty bike!
It was drizzling when tried out this original smoothiebar, so in contrast to the insectenburger I did not have to line up. I took place at one of the three colourful bikes, a girl sliced some banana, apple and orange and put these fruit slices + some orange juice in the blender, which was connected to the bike. Then.... wait for the signal and ....... GO GO GO GO GO GO!
Some minutes later you have an appetizing, refreshing and healthy juice. The perfect counterbalance for all the greasy, unhealthy festival food!
Sooooo this were some of my festival food experiences! It were three amazing and delicious festival days. And I cannot wait for Pukkelpop 2015. But now I just want to take a nap!!!
Elise. Ps. Next week is my mum's birthday so you can expect some birthday cake/pie/cookies/... post!
