A couple of days ago I came back from beautiful California and I already miss it. During the road trip I ate so many nice things at lovely places. I had homemade hamburgers, fresh fish of the day, mushroom risotto, grilled salmon, the best mokka cookie gelato, NY pizza, ... Although I would like to share all of this tasty food with you I just made a selection of delicious and fun food experiences !
Before we headed to CA we made a stop at New York City. There we enjoyed a big typical NY pizza at Lombardi's, NY's oldest pizzeria. Or as they state themselves: "first pizzeria of New York". Don't expect haute-cuisine or something special, but just a decent, yummy pizza. First, you choose your size (6 or 8 slices) and start with the basis (tomato sauce, basil and mozza). Then you add several toppings (meatballs, mushrooms, ...). Et voila, 15 minutes later a giant pizza is delivered to your petite table and the feast can begin!
We did not only have a real New York pizza but also famous New York hot dogs. You can find them in these little vans on the sidewalk of almost every street. Oooh, and a simple hot dog after hours of walking can taste sooooo wonderful!
Next stop: San Francisco! In SF I enjoyed Korean cooking for the first time at Stone. The restaurant is known for their sizzling 500° stone rice bowls, so we had no choice but try them out. I chose one out with beef, homemade gravy and two eggs sunny side-up (Krazy Korean). My boyfriend took quite the same but with chicken instead of beef (Kim Chee Fried Rice).
It was delicious! The meat was cooked perfectly and the combo of the various vegetables and eggs was just fantastic. I will definitely try this again, unfortunately probably not in SF.
During our days in SF we also conquered the chilly SF winds, therefore we had to warm up in a cozy cafe, (which are hard to find in SF), Soluna! Instead of an expensive drink I choose one of the three desserts the bar offered.
I didn't know what to expect but I was really surprised by the finesse of the crumble! It was called peach-thyme-ginger-crumble and consisted of vanilla bean ice cream, taragon, brown sugar-oatmeal crumble, orange zest and thyme-grilled peaches. The various flavours were like a match made in heaven. Njammie!!!
Driving through the stunning dessert of Death Valley we made it to Las Vegas, which was big and decadent! Just as our our hotel (New York New York) with a giant casino, various restaurants, shops, a spa, swimming pool and (why not) a roller coaster. But the best thing they had was a huge chocolate shop (Hershey's), which of course, I had to check out!
The shop was a bit disappointing, because they sold more merchandise than chocolate treats, but I still got a giant, smarties peanut butter cookie which was an absolute treat! I will try to make these myself, so you better keep an eye on the blog.
At our last stop, San Diego, we just wanted to relax and enjoy our last hours in California. So, when we saw the sign "chocolate happy hours" we just couldn't resist and entered Eclipse Chocolate! My boyfriend and I shared a hot chocolate, named "caramel sea-salt" with 51% cacao and had a piece of olive oil almond cake topped with blood-orange chocolate sauce and granola crumble combined with banana and apple slices. It was an exquisite dessert with a very good combo of aromas and surprisingly not the sweetness was not too intense, but was perfectly balanced!
Unfortunately, my road trip is already finished! But I would highly recommend California to everyone who loves, nature, city life, good food, nice weather and friendly people!!!
And for now I am still looking back at my Californian dream.... Elise.
